Alan Stahl holds a Ph.D. in History from the University of Pennsylvania with specialization in Archaeology and Art History. He is the author of ten books and over 100 articles on aspects of numismatics, ranging from ancient through modern coinage, medals, decorations, and paper money. Prior to coming to Princeton University in 2004, he was, for two decades, the Curator of Medieval Coinage and of Medals at the American Numismatic Society. He teaches yearly courses on Ancient and Medieval Numismatics, and The Monetary Economy from Late Antiquity to the Middle Ages for the Program in the Ancient World, Art & Archaeology, Classics, and History,and serves as numismatist for several Princeton excavations.
