Each Spring, the Program in the Ancient World offers funding to graduate students in Classics, History, Religion, and Art and Archaeology for summer study and research. The funding supports fieldwork, participation on archaeological excavations, or other training in the study of material culture and language instruction, as well as travel required for pre-dissertation or dissertation stage.
Last year, the program funded a dozen trips across Europe. They ranged from an archaeological tour of Turkey for research focused on Greek and non-Greek populations of Asia Minor to a tour of archives in Paris, Maine-et-Loire, and Laval for research on the lesser aristocracy of twelfth and thirteenth-century Anjou, investigating how knights sought service in the regimes of the Plantagenet kings of England and the Capetian kings of France. Other trips took a scholar of Roman architecture to Hadrian’s Villa at Tivoli to support the dissertation “Imperial Presence in the Villas of Roman Italy,” and a classicist specializing in Northern Greece to research the Antigonid dynasty of Macedonia in major sanctuaries and religious sites in Greece including Dion and Dodona.
Applications for summer 2020 are now being accepted. Please submit requests through SAFE. The application deadline is Saturday, February 15, 2020.
